The stone is in a bezel setting, allowing as much of the opal color to be shown.

Please note that the strip in the middle is brown ironstone not blue. For some reason, it did not show well in the picture.

Dynamic thrusts of green, blue, orange, emanate from deep inside the stone in a striped fashion showing the natural boulder at the center creating an enduring fascination, every time you look at your Black Opal pendant, or it is seen on your neck.

The dark color of this stone reflects and contrasts nicely with natural skin color, or with a lighter outfit. Set in 14k yellow gold.

Explanation of black boulder opal Stone:

Contrary to common belief, black opals are not black. They were given this name many years ago when the first prospectors who found them were astounded to see the dark brilliant colors coming from an opal that traditionally was considered a light-colored stone.

The Europeans had long known the value of precious opal from the Hungarian mines which as far as we know were all pale or light-colored stones. Then, when opal was found in White Cliffs, and Coober Pedy, most of the stones were pale.

It’s the dark in the background of the opal that causes the color to throw forward and have denseness and dynamic that the more delicate pale opal does not have. The recent opal nomenclature (official naming) has given a clearer definition of Black Boulder opals.
