The term ‘crystal’ does not accurately describe the stone because opal is not crystalline, but when the first miners found them they thought that since some of them are quite translucent, the closest thing they could think of was I guess their mum’s crystal dishes.

But the name has stuck and recently those responsible to establish a nomenclature for opal decided to leave it since it has been known by that term for so long.

Coober Pedy is the international capital for crystal opal or white opal in the world. The two types of opal are distinguished by the fact that white opal is opaque in that the color rests on the surface of the opal and is not translucent.
