Black Opal Description:
The terminology ‘black opal’ can be confusing. Naturally, you would think that these gemstones are black but in actual fact, the term is used to describe the background color of the stone which is either dark grey or black.
The brilliant colors of the stone are in the foreground as is seen in this lovely piece set in yellow gold.
Opal Ring Origin: Lightning Ridge opal fields
Please take a look here so that you can get an idea about where this delightful little round black opal comes from. Black opals have been mined in this area since the middle of the 19th century. Originally the field was discovered by people who were not looking for opal. They were most likely Drovers (this term applies to Sheep-men in Australia)
They discovered small bright-colored stones in an area where there was a lot of Lightning. Hence the name Lightning Ridge. At the time, no one knew if these stones were valuable but the appeal was amazing and it wasn’t long before miners started to go to this area, and eventually parcels of the new stones were shown in London and other parts of the world.
I believe the first parcel sold for a mere ten shillings or so (about one dollar) Steadily this price kept going up until in recent years the value has got out of hand. Some stones selling for up to $10,000 and more PER CARAT. (a carat stone is about the size of a small fingernail)
