Opal Pendant –
Boulder Opal freeform set in sterling silver
75 to 99
Boulder opal pendants like this are unique in the world to Queensland Australia. Each piece is totally different and has colors that change as its moved. They are popular as pendants to both men and women.
Please note: This natural ironstone opal is set in pure sterling silver. It has been cleaved out of the red Queensland desert using excavators and hand tools. Often the boulders that produce this amazing stone are half the size of a small car. They first have to be smashed with sledgehammers as the opal miner looks for signs of color.
When an indication of the cobweb-like veins is spotted, great care has to be taken to break the stone down to a manageable size so that it can be sliced first with large diamond saws then gradually smaller saws, then finally various grades of diamond grinders until the stone is fashioned into either a freeform design or specific shapes such as ovals, rectangles, squares, rounds, etc.
When that is done, a final polish is achieved using diamond grit up to 50,000 in fineness or cerium oxide powder. If you would like to learn more about this, take a look here

‘Opal Pendant’ or ‘necklace’ This means that the stone has been set in metal, in this case, sterling silver. The pendant has what is termed a ‘bale’ at the top so that the neck chain can go through. This pendant has a chain included so you don’t have to go and buy one.
