Black Opals come mainly from the Lightning Ridge field in western NSW. Until they were discovered about 100 years ago the world only knew white or pale opal.
For the first time, opal was found with a black opal background. This caused an effect that held the brilliance of the stone ‘captive’ Forcing the color to stand out more with a starkness not known in any other gemstone.
Unlike many other gemstones, black opals value increases depending on supply and demand. These gems are getting more and more difficult to find and their value is sure to increase dramatically unless new fields are found.
