Dark opals are found in most of the other opal fields including Lightning Ridge, Andamooka and the Queensland opal fields. Actually all Australian opal is similar in structure. The various types are categorized by what they are associated with. If the crystal opal has black potch in the background, it’s black opal.

If it has dark brown to black ironstone in the background it is black boulder opal. If it has darkness within itself it becomes black crystal.
